Since user 774 was kind enough to leave this review, and itch weirdly does not display reviews, I'm posting it on their behalf. Appreciate your kind feedback, 774!

----------

Note: fast and loose review, I apologize for any grammatical/spelling errors! This game is insane. It truly takes the cake out of the various fangames I've played as a product of labor and love.

It is basically a play-by-play of the original game from Ashley's perspective which is simultaneously trying to explain all the "videogame-isms" of the plot, witticisms every textbox, sympathy for Ashley's position and an actual look at her inner character (since the game itself never let you see much of her internal voice), references galore (resident evil and videogames in general), and of course major thirsting. There's a joke almost every line, to the point that for every 1 that doesn't land 5 more do. In terms of branching content, there is enough to justify 2 full-ish playthroughs (second one can skip to the first branching point). The convenient episode select system allows you to skip to Luis' and the solo endings quite easily so I would recommend playing Leon's route first.

I still can't quite believe the level of work it would have taken to make the game feel practically like you're playing the original game. It's clear it would only have been possible with the engine chosen - the amount of video/gif backgrounds, audio files, models extracted, rigged, edited, and photoshopped is overwhelming. There is also plenty of original art assets made for the game as well. Unfortunately this does mean that the game occasionally chugs a little attempting to load such large assets, but as long as you're patient and don't try to click too fast through it, it's not a major issue. The UI can also be a little clunky, but it doesn't ruin the experience.

Favorite moments: Meeting Leon and his barrel blast addiction; Ashley's "meditations" and dreams; meeting Luis and Ashley's "Violent Reaction"; all of Ashley's alter egos but special shout outs to Trashley, Slashley, and Smashley; Ashley Graham Ace Attorney, Ashley trying to mind manipulate Leon to let her do something to him (I laughed for like 10 minutes over it), everytime heavy metal played in the background, Saddleon, and various moments in the last few episodes I do not want to spoil because they are utterly glorious.  TL;DR: 100% worth playing. Obviously, you'll get a lot more out of it if you've played the original Re4 (or at least know the plot) or resident evil games in general; but I think this game would be fun for pretty much anyone who enjoys videogames or otome games. It's that good.

so i first played and reviewed this game... i wanna say early 2021?? i dont remember, but at the time, i was only passingly familiar with the RE series and this was the only RE game (officially afflilated or not xP) that i had ever played. i finally revisted it over a year and a half later now that i'm an actual RE fan, and this game is still my favorite piece of RE media by far. the humor is so on-point from start to finish, all the references are great (especially the ace attorney tribute, which was formerly my favorite part of the game but has now been usurpsed by the leon and ashley conversations you guys added now that i appreciate leon way more), and it makes ashley such an awesome character who i loved spending a whole day with again. however the re4 remake recharacterizes ashley to modernize her, that portrayal won't hold a candle to ashley, trashley, or cashley (rip) in my heart 💞

hey spudomie! thanks for stopping by with those very kind words! we're flattered to know the game still holds up once you've got some resident evil games under your belt lol. glad to also know that you managed to get the bonus scenes, 'cause i still worry that i made the puzzle too obtuse. now, of course, i feel bad that i never finished that extended ace attorney bonus scene lol (i got about 50% done and then moved on to other things) - maybe i'll slip that into another update when the remake comes out.

we're also excited to see how the remake updates ashley's character - and really, the only direction to go is up - but it makes us secretly happy to know you'll be critiquing capcom's rendition against our own. ;)

<3 trashley/cashley. did you happen to take the other path to see the other alter egos?

be sure to leave an itch review if you have a minute! (the game page was redone earlier in the year, so any prior reviews were reset). thanks again for playing and supporting otome edition! as ashley would say, "dios bless". :)

The last portion of this comment didnt age quite well.
RE4 Remake Ashley turned out to be a peak waifu material, even surpassing the original one in terms of portrayal, likeability, personality, and ofcourse.. Ballistics!

we're glad you had a good time! thanks for your rating!

Is there a way the game could be released in another place to download? Mega caps the download and whatever the other option is, It asks me for my windows login but I don't think I have one?

The only option is to play in browser but it seems a bit slow/laggy.

Thanks for asking! Sorry that the Mega download isn't working for you, but I would think the Mirror (hosted on OneDrive) should work. I double-checked and see now that the public link had expired. I've updated it so give that a try and let me know if it works!

Hello! I really love this VN so much! Thank you for the hard work! Really love the portrayal of Ashley and Merchant the most :D I unlocked some CGs but I'm having trouble with some

I just wanna ask regarding the bonuses, do I have to continue playing until the epilogue (even if the animation for the unlocked cg showed up) in order to unlock a cg? in my case, I tried to just jump in an episode and after picking a choice, seeing the unlock animation on the upper left corner, and finishing the episode I will exit to main screen and see if the cg was unlocked but it wasn't. I also saw the hint/description it says 3 unlocks, what does it mean? I hope I don't sound too annoying :')

I unlocked the main pictures/CGs btw (the construction, leon, luis, and merchant) but never the remaining 5 cg

Hey! Thank you for playing the game and the kind words! We're thrilled to know you're enjoying it! :)

About the unlocks, don't worry! If anything, it sounds like I need to go back and make that a little clearer lol. No, the unlock is immediate and you don't need to continue playing. But when it says something like "3 unlocks", that means there are three separate conditions to meet to unlock the full picture. The flashing pictures are supposed to give a vague clue about which episodes the unlocks happen in, but I'll add a little color:

#5: There are two items you can fill the hole with, or avoid filling it at all.

#6: The first two are just choices to let Leon "handle things"; for the third, what happens if you just let Leon attack things like he loves to do? :D

#7: The "gifts" are the three gondola items that Leon offers. The bass is obvious, but what if you have one of those other items when facing the regenerator or Saddleon?

#8: This one's really just about that split path in the woods. You can basically jump to the different versions of episodes 13/14 and 25/26 to unlock whatever you're missing here.

#9: In the 9th episode of each chapter, there's always pain if you're looking closely for it (there's something to click on a specific background image, usually only for 1-2 frames; sometimes flashing). ;)

Let me know if that helps you finish!

(+1)

tysm for the help! i was able to unlock the bonus ❤️ it was fun trying to figure out the needed reqs hehe

(1 edit)

Awesome, glad that everything worked! Hope you enjoyed the bonus scenes, too (I know one of them is technically not finished, I may put out another update one of these days to resolve that lol). Be sure to leave a review and tell your friends!

i will! also, is it just me or the audio for the other dance was from a produce48 performance? 😭😂😂😂 ngl I love it (and lol-ed a lot!)

(+1)

This brought me so much joy. Not only a hilarious parody, it actually added some needed development to Ashley's character. Thanks for all the hard work that went into this! <3

(1 edit) (+1)

Thank you so much for the kind words! We appreciate you giving our rendition of Ashley a chance to be loved. :) Now we can all enjoy knowing that Ashley is having a rich inner life while we're stupidly breaking barrels lol. Be sure to leave a rating and tell your friends! (assuming they won't look at you funny)

I absolutely loved this game! It’s truly the Resident Evil game I never knew I needed, and I am so glad to have it. Turning the events of RE4 into an otome/dating sim game is a brilliant idea, one that works incredibly well. I mean, who hasn’t had a crush on RE4 Leon at some point? This game gives you all the Leon fanservice you could ever want and also has quite a bit of it for other characters like Luis.

I had such a blast playing RE4: Otome Edition. I had a smile on my face the entire game, and I was almost always laughing at something in it, too. It’s hilarious, creative, and clever all at the same time, with amazing original jokes and sequences that reference other great franchises (like Ace Attorney, and, if I remember correctly, the Zero Escape series). One of my favorite parts of the game was when Ashley recalls her past trauma in a way that’s supposed to help her better cope with it, and as a result, everything turns into a “bro” joke/pun. It was so hilarious and had me laughing the entire time.

RE4: Otome gives Ashley so much personality and the chance to finally shine (which the original game never really did). I adored her as a character and thought her many internal monologues were super funny. It even gives Ashley’s point of view while hiding in dumpsters, waiting for Leon to return, and shows what that may have been like for her. I have to say, I’ve always thought it was kind of funny she hopped into dumpsters to hide and was just left there while Leon did his thing. It’s so funny that Otome Edition actually explores this and gives you such a deep view into Ashley’s mindset throughout this terrifying, hilarious, and fanservice filled journey.

I also loved that there were multiple routes included and a lot of branching paths. I loved this game so much I started with Leon’s route, then went back and played through the other ones as well. I’m very happy to say I achieved all the endings for this. It was totally worth it, without a doubt.

I think this is such a good game. It’ll make you smile, laugh, swoon, and possibly spit out whatever you happen to be eating or drinking at the time. It’s that good. I also think it’s a great game to play whether you’ve played RE4 before or are completely new to it. If you have played it, this puts a completely new and refreshing spin on RE4 without actually having to play the original again. It brings back all the nostalgia from playing RE4 for the first time, while also turning it into a hilarious and unique journey all its own. And if you’re new to Resi 4, I think you’ll still love this, as it’s a funny and charming dating sim whether you have any knowledge of the original or not. The game has been updated since I initially played it, so my review is for the  previous version. However, I’ll definitely be playing through the game again to experience all the content that was added in the latest update. I can’t recommend RE4: Otome Edition enough! Go play it!

I would love to play it, but MEGA always crashes for me. Is there a different way to download this?

I assume you tried the alternative OneDrive download link?

(+1)

The trick to MEGA is when downloading keep page on screen then it doesn't crash I have had it on screen it takes less time to download but if I watch YouTube, and it's not on-screen it slows down and sometimes crashes

Glad to hear you're enjoying Ashley's version of events, silly as they might be! (and bound to get sillier, ha.) Hope you'll see it through to the end! :)

RE4 Otome was constructed by stringing together brief animated scenes of gameplay from the actual video game itself, mixed seamlessly with extra asides designed by the team at Shimmersoft. Gameplay involved clicking to advance the scenes and read the narrative text and dialogue associated with each scene. Some of the choices revealed more detail about the background of the story, often divulged through conversation. Many of the choices offered in the game seem to be intended as moments to highlight the personality of the heroine, Ashley, rather than to change the actual course of the game, though there were a few choices in the game that could result in dead ends and auto-restarted to continue from the same decision juncture. Most of the game felt like a kinetic visual novel rather than a choice-driven one, so go into it expecting a fun ride without many opportunities to change the outcome.

The sarcasm and wit in this game is neverending, and keeps every moment absolutely entertaining. Unexpected comments and the hilarious random musings of the slightly ditzy heroine, Ashley, painted the normally grim circumstances of Resident Evil in comedic hues. I seriously laughed out loud when the hero, Leon, started breaking a barrel to get a healing leaf. Ashley's resulting confusion and speculation about his anti-barrel obsession was even funnier. This visual novel makes fun of ridiculous video game conventions and how absurdly convenient some of them are, never straying far from the context of the story viewed through Ashley's innocent an naïve eyes.

Overall, this is a very fun and hilarious take on the dark events in Resident Evil 4, and the shift in perspective to the heroine, Ashley, made this feel like a totally different game, even though I'd played through the original Capcom game before. Many of Ashley's thoughts about Leon were absolutely hilarious and memorable, suggesting this game could become a cult classic (haha) with fans endlessly quoting it to each other. If you're looking for a humorous take on the Resident Evil series viewed from the heroine's perspective, and if you don't mind the endless stream of humor, this is an enjoyable way to relive the original RE4 experience!

I know jackshit about RE4.

Am I still gonna play this?

Absolutely. :D

(+4)

You've got the right attitude!

(+5)

know the game and have watched gameplays but dont really know the what main plot is about but... ive always thought Leon is attractive and therefor im gonna play this just for him and because i got nothing better to do :')

(+3)

fortunately, the game's plot has about the same depth as leon's hair part and otome edition gives enough detail that you'll know basically what's going on. good luck scoring that himbo! :)

Hey!! I only played till episode 5 thru the browser and i'm wondering.. Is there an alt method of download? Mega stopped at 1.40gb and keeps giving errors, and the browser version is getting too laggy for me :/

Hey! Sorry you ran into that trouble! I just added an alternative download option for the Windows version - give that a shot and let me know if it works (granted, I am concerned you'll encounter the same issue as Mega due to your Internet resisting the large download). If it doesn't work, I may have to try something else, like breaking the game into chunks and letting you reassemble them. Let me know!

Oh it worked like a charm!! Many thanks :DD

(oof. forgot to hit 'post reply')

I've been enjoying the game so far! I just gave the Merchant a codename lmao (def don't wanna smooch the man i swear)

(1 edit)

Awesome! Hope you have fun with the rest of the game! And don't worry, this is a judgment-free space. ;)

(1 edit) (+1)

just finished now and i really love it :)  not sure if i'll be able to unlock every images and solve the puzzle though.

i'm glad i got to knew this amazing visual novel (and i'll have to really play resident evil 4 to fully understand everything )

(+1)

We're really happy to hear you had a good time! Whose ending(s) did you get? Any particular episode that got the most chuckles or surprise out of you? :)

To be fair, you couldn't have really completed the puzzle because I just discovered some broken elements lol. I've quietly spent the day correcting issues and I think I've got everything covered. If you want a go at it, you should try installing the patch file I just added to Itch, or you can also just download a fresh copy, which has all the changes included (anything you've unlocked so far will be preserved, don't worry).

I tried to avoid making the puzzle clues too obtuse, but I'll be happy to give you any extra hints! Otherwise, if you just want to see the bonus content without all the struggle, you can reach out to me via email, Discord, or Twitter and I'll send you a cheat code. ;)

Really appreciate you giving the game a chance! Hope you'll tell your friends and consider our other games!

(+1)

about the ending it seems i got Leon ending ,at least i think giving the picture of them both in bed after the 4 years passed ,which i guess is probably the easiest? i think i saw what to do for Luis and the Merchant guy so i'll have to try and see :) . i do not think there something to be done with salad or saddle ahaha, or there is?

i do not have many friends but i shared your game page on facebook :)

i will download the patch then ,easier for me than downloading all again (my computer is slow )

i will check you other games too for sure :)

(+1)

i barely remember seeing my brother playing resident evil 4  but i played the 1,2,3 ,5,6  , great visual novel and very funny :)

(+1)

Thank you, glad you've enjoyed it! Hopefully everything made sufficient sense, even with only a cursory memory of RE4. Did you manage to romance anybody? Or maybe everybody?

(+1)

yes everything makes sense even if i dont really remember much about resident evil 4 ,i should probably play it for a better understanding,

not sure why i never thought about it before considering that during this time of covid i re played a lot of old games.

i have not yet been to the end of the visual novel but i wanted to comment already , it's a great thing that you made this point vieuw from Ashley side , more games would need such side vieuw i believe :) aside from the bubbles dreams of Ashley i have not seen any romance yet

(+1)

I'm pretty sure I'm legally obligated to tell you to go play RE4, so Capcom doesn't think I'm trying to deprive them of sales on a 15-year-old game lol.

But we're glad you like seeing things from Ashley's perspective! We also felt it was important for her to regain some agency, since the game itself treats her so poorly.

Of course, since we're following the game's original plot, most of the "romance" is, well, in Ashley's brain lol. But some of your decisions are improving your chances  of getting a guy's ending, so stay diligent!

(1 edit) (+1)

i will play it  surely sometime soon it's just knowing how all resident evil's are  I am not really lost in following your visual novel :)

(they won't be deprived on sales lol i have the game somewhere among other games )

( for some reason  my place as become a sanctuary for old games and consoles in my family which is why i have resident evil 4  even if i never played it )

you right it's important to give some love to characters that does not get enough of it on their original game ,i can think of a few like that.

i hope that i'll be seeing some funny endings :) Ashley is amazing :)

(+1)

Ohh!! Looking forward to playing this haha. My browser is pretty laggy so I'll download !! :D

(+1)

Awesome! Yeah, I'd recommend the Windows version unless you just have good Internet speed or just really want to play it on a tablet/phone in bed (which is viable). Hope you enjoy!

(+3)

what in gods name have i found

(1 edit) (+1)

it seems like you've found the world's longest love letter masquerading as a shitpost, lol. or maybe it's the other way around. you can tell us after you play it. ;)

Is this safe for work?

(+2)

Content-wise, I'd say it's largely PG13. Some upper body male nudity, cursing, snippets of RE4's inherent violence.

But would I want to explain the premise to a coworker who happened to walk by? Hell no lol.

Hope that helps!
